Member object 2024 is by Boris de Beijer. Artist Boris de Beijer was trained at the Rietveld Academy as a jewelry designer. But after graduating, Boris soon started working in a broader, multidisciplinary way. In doing so, he likes to use old, traditional techniques. And sometimes he misuses these techniques to achieve innovative results. In short, all the ingredients for an interesting member object are at hand.
‘In my practice, craft, technique and material have a central position. This has always been the case, and early on I developed a nostalgic love for old traditional techniques. When I first stepped into the glass-blowing studio, I saw that very specific tools are also used in this craft, and that these tools in more or less the same form were also used a few thousand years ago, in exactly the same way. In all their simplicity, these glass tools are perhaps among the most beautiful. And the fact that they have hardly changed in all these centuries I find fascinating.’
For the member object, Boris based his design on exactly this simplicity. A simplistic, elementary form, which on the one hand is everyday, and at the same time could be used for an enormous variety of functions. The technique used to create the member object is also based on an old tradition. That of melting glass in a mold. Glass melting is basically a simple technique that has remained virtually unchanged since ancient times.
‘Still, I wanted my version of the member object to have something quirky and contemporary. I therefore chose a form that has something futuristic about it. Pointing upward like a rocket, and colorful like neon lights in a modern city. Or maybe actually a tool from another civilization from the distant future. I leave it to the viewer to figure out for themselves exactly what my object is. An artifact from a time that may be coming.
The price for members of the VVMG is €450. Non-members can also buy the object, they pay €495. Orders can be made using the link below to the order form.
Orders will be accepted through Feb. 28, 2025.
