Nominations Bernardine de Neeve Prize 2024 / 2025

The winner of the 10th Bernardine de Neeve Prize will be announced in 2025. On October 4, 2024 during Glasrijk Tubbergen, the jury made its choice from the 28 artists selected from the total of 58 entries, which were on display in the Protestant Church in Tubbergen.

It was interesting to see what inspires glass artists today and what motivates them to work with glass. The exhibition showed how many stories can be told with the magical material of glass. A wide range of techniques were used to materialize the artists’ visions and highlight the diversity of glass as an artistic medium.

The title of the exhibition An Engaging Cacophony was chosen because the contributors’ objects were randomly placed together in a limited space. The choice to be rather loose with the entries did not prove to be a real objection. One might even say that the current state of art in glass was done some justice by presenting it so broadly.

The entries offered a rich but also curious overview: inspiring works in glass, where the passion splashed off. A source of inspiration for a new generation of artists working with glass. Of course, the jury was also faced with a dilemma: How can they compare the submitted works and base their opinions on them? After all, each artist has a different practice and a different relationship between concept and craftsmanship.

Ultimately, the jury, consisting of Titia Felderhof, Myriam Knol and Barbara Nanning, identified three nominees for final selection and the accompanying exhibition at the National Glass Museum Leerdam in spring 2025: Florian van Dalen, Krista Israel and Patricia Overdam.

The nominees

(A) Patricia Overdam. Patricia is a storyteller. The judges were particularly impressed by her recycled material use and the combinations of different materials such as glass, bicycle tires, metal and others. It was characterized as tough work.

(B) Krista Israel. Krista, too, is a storyteller who has mastered and utilized the material glass to its fullest potential and depicts its beauty in a variety of objects. The jury is curious to see what her next step in her work will be and appreciates her professionalism.

(C) Florian van Dalen. He made maximum use of the properties of glass, paid great attention to its assembly and presentation. Research plays an important role in his work. The jury especially appreciated the simplicity of his work

Honorable mentions

In addition, the jury wanted to highlight three artists they felt were worthy of an honorable mention: Emmy van de Grift, Luna Cordaro and Rob von Piekartz.

(D) Rob von Piekartz because of the humor in his work and the surprising combinations of materials.

(E) Luna Cordaro due to the fact that she has only been working with the material glass for a short time, makes promising work and experiments a lot. The jury is curious about the further steps in her career.

(F) Emmy van de Grift for the use of the old stained glass craft combined with new techniques and a surprising use of color.
