From six submissions, the VVMG board unanimously chose the design “Search for light” by Belgian artist Christine Vanoppen.
Christine Vanoppen (born 1962) graduated in 1980 from St. Mary’s College. Lucas Institute in Hasselt, Belgium in Visual Arts and attended Monumental Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium from 1980 to 1985. During this course, she chose to specialize in flat glass and stained glass windows.
Through working with flat glass, she became more and more interested in making free work in glass as well. Vanoppen began experimenting with the material and took several courses to work with glass. Thus, she trained in glass art at the Institute of Arts and Crafts in Mechelen, Belgium under the guidance of Miloslava Svobodova and Koen Vanderstukken from 1994 to 1997. She also participated in several workshops for specific techniques such as glass blowing, casting, enameling and printing on glass. Her personal work evolved from flat glass to three-dimensional forms, with both glassblowing and mold melting influencing her work. Working on the burner with borosilicate glass , she was able to find and express her formal language more easily. Taking inspiration from nature, she transforms it into transparent sculptures. The graphic aspect is an important element of her work, with layering and line play providing important input. The lines of the three-dimensional form radiate strength and vulnerability at once. It is a woven complex construction that evokes reminiscences of a sketch in space. Through a play of shadows, light and transparency, the viewer is invited to reflect on the fragility and complexity of life.
